Stay at The Old Mushroom Farm self catering accommodation

There are some unique accommodation options on the farm that all have their own points of interest and charm. Experience a weekend under the curved ceiling of an ex-mushroom growing tunnel. Get the best views from the Loft Apartment, or choose a quaint cosy cottage or spacious and modern Boutique Apartment. Get the extended family together and book out an entire 15pax house. There are fantastic options to suit any occasion.

Once you’re booked in, here are the top 10 best things to do while staying at The Old Mushroom Farm:

Watch a show in Playhouse 5

Keep an eye on our upcoming events page for exciting shows, workshops and live music events in The Old Mushroom Farm’s event venue in Tunnel 5. There is likely something great showing over the weekend of your stay.

Pick fruit and veg in The Old Mushroom Farm Community Garden

Experience harvesting your own produce from the community food garden. Harvesting from the garden is free for accommodation guests, (and a nominal charge for day visitors). Make a fresh salad to accompany your weekend braai with fresh greens picked in the garden. The shared green space has an abundance of fresh, organic, seasonal fruit and veg- with interesting produce- like artichokes and tree tomatoes- that you won’t often see in the grocery store.

Workout at the gym- we recommend joining a group class

Activ8 Performance is a functional fitness facility (similar to a CrossFit style gym) that offers group classes every day of the week (except Sundays). Work on your fitness and build strength while meeting like minded folk.

Browse the shops

Visit the artisans who have set up shop in The Old Mushroom Farm Tunnels. Starting at the Central Walkway, we have Cosmic Crystals in Tunnel 1 with a sparkling array of gemstones, incense and decor. Find Nude Soaps shop and mini factory in Tunnel 2, where they make their soap in small batches from natural ingredients. Alkaline have set up their Factory Shop and production studio in Tunnel 3 where they make gorgeous homeware and decor. The Makers Market in Tunnel 4 is a shared retail space where local artisans both produce and sell their wares. In the opposite row of tunnels we have Midlands Books and Collectibles with their treasure trove of second hand books and antiques. In Tunnel 9a you’ll find Onyx Rain handmade Chocolates, and in 9b Rock Paper Scissors local designer goods store.

Enjoy time outdoors on the farm walking/ running trail

We have +-6 km of trail which follows the perimeter of the property, taking you through gorgeous grasslands, wetlands, forested areas and dairy pastures.

Come hungry and eat out

Home Slice Cafe is open for breakfast, lunch and teatime treats. They’ve got a great selection of plant based alternatives, as well as catering for the meat lovers. Exploring Coffee Country Cafe makes the best wood-oven pizza. Bring a cold bottle of white from your accommodation unit and enjoy a long lunch overlooking the gorgeous countryside view.

Let the kids loose in the Children's Play Area

An ideal open space -within view of restaurant seating- for kids to run free (also rather fun for grown ups). Cool off on the water slide, whizz down the mini zip-line, or jump for joy on the trampoline.

Fill your holiday pantry with some gourmet treats during your weekend getaway in the KZN Midlands

Check out Sally’s Midlands Mixes for the best gluten free granola and delicious snacks for an active lifestyle. Home Slice Cafe has an in house bakery and deli section where you can pick up some freshly baked bread, sweet treats, homemade preserves and nibbles.

Did we mention that The Old Mushroom Farm is pet friendly?

Dogs are welcome so long as they are socialised and well trained. Get your pooch a doggy treat from Home Slice Bakery and meet other fur- parents along the walking trail.

Stroll around the property and admire the architecture

As the name suggests, the farm was once an agricultural mushroom farm. Many of the old buildings have been artfully converted to people-oriented spaces by architect Nick Crooks. Curiosity is encouraged- for those with a keen eye, there is architectural interest everywhere you look.

For a truly unforgettable weekend getaway in the KZN Midlands, The Old Mushroom Farm offers the perfect blend of relaxation, adventure, and charm. Whether you’re exploring the unique shops, harvesting fresh produce, or simply soaking in the scenic beauty, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Ready to experience it for yourself?
