At The Old Mushroom Farm, the whole is greater than the sum of our parts. Restoring old mushroom tunnels led to creative community spaces. Planting a community garden led to new connections. And a cluster of indigenous saplings paired with a vision and care becomes an indigenous forest one day.
This Mandela Month, we're grateful to have welcomed a meaningful contribution from Inspirations Travel & Tours, who donated 15 indigenous trees through their Corporate Social Investment partnership with Food & Trees for Africa. The donation forms part of their commitment to Mandela Day, celebrating the idea that small acts of generosity can create lasting change.
The trees have found a home within our growing green landscape, joining the existing citrus orchard, indigenous forest and fruit trees in the vegetable gardens that have gradually transformed this former commercial mushroom farm into a place where people, plants and creativity grow together.
Our Community Food Garden has always been about more than pretty gardens. The space creates opportunities to learn, connect and support one another. Harvesting the fresh produce grown in the gardens is a fun experience for The Old Mushroom Farm's accommodation guests, and also helps buffer our staff and their families with fresh organic food. Surplus harvests become homemade jams, preserves and other products that generate income for entrepreneurs on The Old Mushroom Farm and reduces waste.
When Nick first started fixing up the farm, he planted a patch of indigenous trees near the stream which was degraded by cattle grazing. This little patch has now canopied and is a beautiful sanctuary for visitors and wildlife. Every one of these new trees from Inspirations Travel & Tours strengthens the wider ethos of the farm and builds on this ecosystem, improving biodiversity, supporting local wildlife and contributing to a healthier landscape for years to come.
It's easy to get swept up in the notion that sustainability is something grand and complicated. It's often as simple as thinking about what impact our actions today will have on the future. We hope the trees planted today will offer shade decades from now, and becomes a place where neighbours meet, children learn and communities root.
We're incredibly thankful to Inspirations Travel & Tours and Food & Trees for Africa for investing in this vision alongside us. Their support reminds us that places are shaped not only by the people who live there, but also by those who believe in the same vision.
As we continue feeding the land at The Old Mushroom Farm, these 15 trees will stand as a symbol of lasting change that happens one tree, one act of generosity and one partnership at a time.
