Welcome to another instalment of The Old Mushroom Farm Directory, where we introduce you to the talented artisans who have set up shop the ex-mushroom growing tunnels of The Old Mushroom Farm. This week, we chatted to Pip, the owner and curator of Rock Paper Scissors, a contemporary goods store that champions South African brands and independent designers. Through her unique curation of clothing, homeware, and lifestyle products, Pip has created a space that celebrates Slow Fashion and conscious purchasing. Read about her journey, her passion for supporting local artisans, and why Rock Paper Scissors is a must-visit on your next trip to The Old Mushroom Farm.
Please introduce yourself, introduce your business and describe what it is that you do.
My name is Pip. I’m the owner and curator of, Rock Paper Scissors contemporary goods store. RPS is a collection of small South African brands and independent designers producing various clothing, homeware, and lifestyle products. I source products from designers nationally and create a small range of plush toys and apparel myself.
Would you describe your business as artisanal and or ‘indie’ (independent)? Why?
Yes! We’re all about supporting independent designers and nurturing artisans at their craft. The brands we stock are all individuals who share our appreciation of quality over quantity- nothing in the store is imported or mass-produced.
How and when did your business start? And how long have you been at The Old Mushroom Farm?
Rock Paper Scissors was one of the first shops to open at The Old Mushroom Farm, alongside Home Slice and Activ8. I moved back to the Midlands (where my family is based) from Cape Town during the COVID-19 pandemic and decided to stay. Rock Paper Scissors was my COVID baby and is now four years old.
If your business journey up to this point was a movie title, what would it be?
Hmm... "If you call it bric-a-brac again, I’ll punch you." Just kidding. "Slow Fashion on the farm"? No. "A gentle anti-consumerist punk making slow fashion the new normal."
What is your favourite thing about being at The Old Mushroom Farm?
I love the ethos of the place and the concept behind TOMF. Ex-mushroom growing tunnels have been repurposed into people-oriented spaces encouraging artisans to have their workshops and creative studios in the spaces- not just retail fronts. Witnessing the hands at work behind a beautifully made item gives the place soul.
What message would you like to put out there to encourage folks to support small businesses like yours?
When you support a local business, you're buffering your own ecosystem. You are feeding into your neighbour's wellbeing which essentially makes your bubble a better place to be. At Rock Paper Scissors, we're all about building a strong and thriving community that supports independent South African brands. Your money goes directly to local artists, designers, and creators who put their heart and soul into their work.
Rock Paper Scissors is a testament to the incredible design and creative talent in South Africa, offering a carefully curated selection of contemporary goods that you won’t find in other shops the area. Pip’s dedication to supporting local artisans and designers aligns perfectly with the ethos of The Old Mushroom Farm, making it a must-visit for anyone exploring the KZN Midlands. Whether you’re searching for unique homeware, fashion, or simply want to experience the magic of a space that nurtures creativity, Rock Paper Scissors and The Old Mushroom Farm have something special to offer. Plan your visit and be part of this thriving community.
