Discover the Art of Espalier at The Old Mushroom Farm, KZN Midlands

Espalier is a centuries-old technique of pruning plants to grow in specific, artistic shapes. Here at The Old Mushroom Farm, we're taking this method to the next level by creating a living, fruiting fence between our charming Boutique Apartments.

As winter draws to a close, it's the perfect time to prune our plum trees and prepare them for spring growth. We've constructed a simple steel framework that will guide and support the new branches, transforming them into a horizontal, green sculptures. These trees were planted last summer, and while they’ve developed strong, sturdy stems, we’ll be cutting them back to focus their energy on two new branches. These will form the first tier of our espalier plum hedge—a beautiful and functional living barrier.

Over the next few years, we'll continue to shape these trees, creating multiple tiers of lush, fruit-bearing branches. It’s a long process, but the reward is a stunning natural fence that also serves as a source of fresh plums for our guests. Imagine enjoying homemade plum jam made from the very trees you admired during your stay!

The dry KZN winters are ideal for this type of pruning, reducing the risk of fungal infections. We've also taken extra care by painting the cut stems to seal in moisture and ensure healthy growth.

Visitors to The Old Mushroom Farm can witness this fascinating process firsthand and see the beauty of espaliered plum trees up close. It’s a unique sight, blending horticulture with art, and it’s just one of the many reasons to explore our farm.

Why not make a day of it? Stroll through our scenic Community Garden, enjoy a meal at one of our artisanal eateries, and experience the peaceful countryside atmosphere that makes The Old Mushroom Farm a must-visit destination in the KZN Midlands. Stay tuned for updates on our espalier project, and come see the progress for yourself on your next visit!
