About the Mushrooms... There Aren't Any.
We know. The word “mushroom” is right there in our name, The Old Mushroom Farm. But you seem to be missing a smaller, but crucial detail: “old.”
Once upon a time, long ago, we did grow mushrooms here. It was dark, damp, and mysterious. White button mushrooms were grown by the ton. A distinct smell of compost filled the air and the paths were bustling with forklifts and gumbooted staff.
Then one day, the farmer, Nick, decided it would be more fun to be an architect. He cleared out the mushrooms and started adapting the old farm buildings to be people-oriented spaces. He envisioned a community of artisans crafting and selling their wares.
Long story short, the mushrooms are gone. Not a shiitake in sight.
(P.s. Check out our blog post, The History of The Old Mushroom Farm, for the long story.)
Yet, we still get visitors wandering in with Tupperwares and hopeful eyes asking, “Do you sell mushrooms?”. So let’s settle it once and for all:
No. We do not.
Don't get us wrong, we love mushrooms. We just don't grow them any more.
You can get your 'shroom fix at Bite Society (coming soon), slapped on a wood fire pizza, or at Home Slice Cafe with your poached eggs. But fresh out the compost, no.
* Sidenote, if you’re an artisanal mushroom grower looking to set up shop in Tunnel 9a, we should talk.
The ex-growing tunnels are now filled with:
Artisan studios and proudly South African shops
Coffee & Cake
Live Shows
Fresh air, and friendly dogs
DIY workshops and art exhibitions
Unique holiday accommodation
We think these things are much nicer than rows and rows of humid growing rooms.
We invite you to bring your curiosity and explore these fascinating repurposed spaces, at The Formerly-Fungal, Still-Fantastic Old Mushroom Farm.
