A Studio Like No Other: Photographer Ker Stanley in The Old Mushroom Farm's Converted Reservoir

Take a look inside The Old Mushroom Farm’s most unusual building, and meet the photographic artist bringing the space to life.

There is a photographic artist operating under the radar, tucked into one of the most unusual buildings on The Old Mushroom Farm. A converted water reservoir is now the studio of Keren Stanley. Ker has a diverse portfolio of both commercial and artistic work that reflects his sharp eye and stylistic range. His commercial photography and videography spans on-brand social media content to intimate, documentary-style interviews, crisp product photography to atmospheric festival and wedding coverage. Ker also creates extraordinary, often dreamlike images that blend photography with his expert photo-editing skills, hence why he calls himself an artist and not purely a photographer.

Then there’s the building, which is a source of intrigue in itself. Architect (and former mushroom farmer) Nick Crooks decided to transform the disused water reservoir into something unexpected… and a little playful. Using the original reservoir wall, Nick built up the sides in red brick, arching inward to create a remarkable dome-shaped ceiling crowned by a skylight of glass and steel. From the outside, the building’s rounded form and silver waterproofing makes it resemble a small spaceship, but step inside and you’re met with a surprisingly spacious, light interior. Painted entirely white, the curved walls and ceiling create a seamless infinity backdrop — the dream of any photographer. With no corners to orient yourself, the space feels boundless and slightly disorientating, enhanced by its stunning acoustics.

Ker has made this unusual space his own. He uses a light box for smaller commercial photography, such as product shoots, while the bright, curved room provides a perfect setting for portraits, creative shoots, and video interviews. The result is a working studio that feels both intimate and infinite, practical yet poetic — a reflection of Ker’s own artistic sensibility.

Visits to Ker’s studio are by appointment only, and if you’re staying at The Old Mushroom Farm accommodation, it’s well worth booking a family portrait or couple’s shoot during your visit. The surrounding farm offers a wealth of natural and architectural backdrops, from brick facades to open fields, that make every shoot unique.

Ker has worked on photographic and videography projects for The Old Mushroom Farm, capturing the spirit of the place in his versatile ways. His work is thoughtful and professional and we recommend him highly.
